Video: Pirelli’s Paul Hembery on a controversial Spanish GP

The Spanish GP has re-ignited the debate about Pirelli’s tyres and the impact on the racing in 2013 . The Italian company now finds itself struggling to keep everybody happy, but it has confirmed that it may make changes by Silverstone.

Here’s what its motor sport chief Paul Hembery had to say on how the race unfolded, tyre failures, and possible changes.

Many times I have heard the comment: We (Pirelli) are just giving them what THEY asked for. What I want to know is who the hec are “THEY”. I don’t think Bernie objected but I don’t think he asked for them. I am sure that any fan in their right mind would not have asked for them…. We already have plenty of bells and whistles (KERS,DRS,etc.) to manipulate a race with…. Who on earth wants to watch a pit stop contest with a set of tyres that is presently giving 40 miles of service…. Is that realistic of anything?

I have avidly follow F1 for over 30 yrs. but this is the first time that I have come to the conclusion that I have had it. It is simply a joke… There is presently a long distance between the present display and a parade. You can’t even get a handle on what the hec is even going on…. It is simply a round of pit stops, round of commercials, repeat, rinse and now we are off to Monaco… Who gives a rat’s arse???

    Please FIX ASAP………..

This is going to be a never-ending battle for Pirelli.

What the company should do is make tires so hard they’ll last the whole season. No grip of course and the drivers will have to learn to drive again. This will eliminate all that rolled-up rubber on the track and maybe save everyone some money.

Oh, wait… If Red Bull aren’t competitive on these, they’ll complain…

I don’t understand the position that ‘fixing’ the tyres would only be a token to Red Bull. I believe Mercedes is having a little trouble with them. Alonso said that he was only driving 90% and there is a string of names as long as the grid that are not able to give it their best. It is simply not racing if you are running around nursing a component. Craftsmanship like that is reserved for endurance driving. F1 should be a sprint of the best machines and men. One pit stop is more than enough.

And explain to the person who cleans up all that rolled up rubber how GREEN the Pirelli effort is…………

How can Ferrari and Lotus use the given tires to best effect and no one else can?

If there is universal inability to adapt to the tires you can change the chassis set ups/cars or change the tires.
