In the light of Lewis Hamilton’s infamous ‘hooning’ incident in Australia the FIA has made it clear that it won’t tolerate F1 drivers getting into trouble on public roads.
That includes ensuring that they have to have a valid road licence, while there could also be investigations into specific incidents.
Today’s statement said: “The FIA, both in its motor sport and mobility roles, has a strong interest in promoting road safety. Competitors at FIA events must act as ambassadors for the sport, be aware their conduct on the road must be exemplary and respect road safety rules. A proposal to amend the international sporting code will be submitted to the FIA General Assembly to clarify that any holder of an International Super Licence must also be in possession of a current road driving licence.
“Additionally, the Code will be amended to clarify that if an International Super Licence holder is involved in a serious road traffic offence recognised by a national police authority, the FIA, depending on the severity of the case, may issue a warning or refer the matter to the International Disciplinary Tribunal, which may temporarily or indefinitely withdraw the competitor’s International Super Licence.”

If the FIA allow themselves to start sliding down the slippery slope of political correctness, they will alienate themselves from fans.
Big Brother is Watching !
What a driver does off the track is none of the fia’s business.
The fia cant police the races in its charge….
Now they want to babysit the drivers at home and at play??
Why dont they concentrate on the RACING??
Some valid comments here, but you can see the FIA’s point of view in that these guys are being called upon to join road safety campaigns and thus when someone does get into trouble, it reflects badly on the sport. The fact is that instances are extremely rare, which perhaps explains why Lewis got so much attention.
But they are not doing job “A”.
Policing the races on Sunday.
When they get that all figured out then they can expand their responsibilities.
There should be someone else watching the roads,oh yes ,its the police departments of the world.
Has anyone ever heard of double jeapordy? How many times should Hamilton or Montoya or any other speeder, hoon get punished for the same offence?twice ,four times?
Lets see how the Ferrari trial turns out in a couple hours to see if the fia is even capable of controlling races.
It’s a good thing this wasn’t in effect a few years ago when neither Williams driver had a license. Like all other celebrities they live their life under a microscope. It is a sad situation.
I agree, these days drivers can’t be seen to do anything. The same people who moan about the lack of characters are often the first to get fired up if someone is reported as being in a nightclub or at a party. They are human after all… What’s more these days there’s always someone with a camera.
Time was when racers had several driving licences so that when one was taken away they had another up their sleeve! Nanny FIA should not concern its self with what the drivers, and if this is all FIA license holders, not just F1 drivers, get up to off the circuit. Lewis’s case in fact just made him look a bit silly which is punishment enough.
