Turbo V6 the likely route for 2014

A move from four-cylinder to V6 turbos and a postponement of the change from 2013 to 2014 was the compromise discussed by the FIA F1 Commission today, team sources have confirmed.

Even if agreed by the Commission, the changes will have to be formally approved by the World Motor Sport Council in a fax vote.

The V6 layout was used by the likes of Ferrari, Renault, Honda, TAG/Porsche and Ford/Cosworth in the original turbo era, and is more acceptable to the manufacturers – especially Ferrari – as there is arguably a closer affiliation with performance road cars than is provided by the planned four-cylinder.

Keeping the turbo format would be widely seen as a victory for Jean Todt, with the fact that he was willing to compromise on the date an indication that he is willing to listen to alternative views.

What Bernie Ecclestone might gain – other than a different engine note – is not exactly clear.

    fcuk ferrari, honestly.
how many of their cars use a v6? exactly the same number that use a 4 cylinder!

Obviously you no nothing. Ferrari produced 4 cylinder race cars in the late 50’s and 60’s. The Dino was a v6. Ferrari produce engines for alfa and maserati and the next quattroporte is going to get a turbo v6 at some point. Ferrari want turbos to replace there world renowned NA v8 engines and nothing develops tech faster than F1.
A 4 cylinder ferrari today makes no sense.

60 years of f1 and ferrari has been there since the beginning, show some respect. Plus
retaining the V angle for the new engine would be cheaper then designing an inline 4.
      Plus will sound ace.

so they want to use v6s so that they can sell more 1968 dinos?! or so that they can sell more alfa romeos, you know, because they market alfa romeo so much in f1?!

    • However, no of people who’d buy a V6 turbo ferrari is certainly > then 4cylinder!

      Ah, haters. Gotta hate ’em.

  2. Putting aside the politics I think that’s great news. People can identify with a V6 being a “performance” engine – and that’s what F1 should be – rather than a 4-pot of dullness.

  4. I trust Bernie, this season has been crackin with all the changes. I also think it would be nice to see Fernando Alonso winning all 20 F1 Races for five calanders running. Ha ha only joking, lets just keep everything the same shall we…maybe we can even get damon hill to do a shumi eh?

As long as the racing is just as good, who cares if they have just 1 litre engines.
