Grosjean receives one-race ban after Spa shunt

Romain Grosjean won’t be taking part in the Italian GP for Lotus after receiving a one-race suspension for his role in the first corner crash in Spa.

He has also been fined 50,000 euros.

The FIA Stewards decided that he had committed an “extremely serious breach of the regulations which had the potential to cause injury to others. It eliminated leading championship contenders from the race. The stewards note the team conceded the action of the driver was an extremely serious mistake and an error of judgement. Neither the team nor the driver made any submission in mitigation of penalty.”

Lotus can of course run another driver in Italy.

Let’s hope D’Ambrosio gets to drive!

Oh my! That’s the harshest punishment I’ve heard of in a long time. Was this the 3rd or 4th time that he has caused a first lap incident this year? He could be right up in contention for the championship if he hadn’t crashed out so many times. One more incident like this and I think he might have a chance of being dropped by Lotus. Is it possible he could lose his super license if he does it again?

This is actually his 7th first lap crash this year in 12 races. Appalling, in my opinion. Make him start at the back of the grid or from pit lane for the rest of the year until he proves he can actually control an F1 car.

His fine should be to pay all the teams what it costs them to repair their destroyed cars.

  3. Cool, GRO is the new Eddie Irvine! Will be fun to see what JdA can do in a decent car. Also, glad no one was killed in the accident, looked sort of like GP2/GP3 style pile-up.

completely agree with stewards, would put him also on probation for the rest of the year, guess it was his 6th or 7th clash on lap 1 this season… what I cannot understand that Maldonado gets so many penaties and no ban, should also sit out at least a race to learn behaving

A deserved ban, unfortunately. Romain just seems to lack the ability to sense or anticipate what others are doing around him in busy situations.

  6. Doesn’t it seem a little odd that they say this in the ruling: “It eliminated leading championship contenders from the race.” What does that have to do with anything? So if you’re going to crash into people, make sure it’s backmarkers?

Quite agree! If the action being punished has life threatening results it really does not matter whose life it is, leaders, backmarkers, marshalls or spectators.
