Andre Lotterer: “I don’t have much to lose doing this…”

Andre Lotterer says he has nothing to lose by making what at the moment is a one-off appearance for Caterham at Spa.

The 32-year-old German had to get permission from his regular employers, Audi and TOM’S, in order to be allowed to do the race,

“To have the chance to drive is something special, I think not everybody has the chance to jump in like that,” he said today. “I thought I have this opportunity, let’s do it. For sure it’s a big challenge, I think you have to be quite brave to jump in like this in the middle of the season, but the reason I feel ready for it is first of all I still race single-seaters, Super Formula, which I believe is one of the fastest single-seater series after F1. So in that sense I’m not out of shape in formula racing.

“Also I’m racing really complex cars in WEC with Audi. The last time I drove an F1 car was more than 10 years ago, the sport changed and evolved, but on my side for sure I gained a lot of experience as well. It’s something nice to do suddenly in my career. It’s a great opportunity.”

Lotterer says he knows it won’t be easy: “For sure I will have to learn everything very fast, so don’t expect too much from me. Obviously F1 a lot is dictated by the car. I don’t want to speak badly about the team, but we don’t have a winning car. We have an update package, so I hope I can bring all my experience, my speed, as fast as possible.

“The wins in other categories gave me the confidence as well to think, OK, I have an established career on the other side, which is Le Mans with Audi, and also in parallel in Japan, so I don’t have much to lose doing this, let’s say.”

Red Bull will struggle at Spa and Monza, says Horner

Christian Horner admits that after Daniel Ricciardo’s great win in Hungary the next two tracks will be much harder for Red Bull.

It’s been clear all season that the RB10 has suffered at high speed venues, and Horner expects all the Mercedes teams to surge ahead in Belgium and Italy.

“You never know, it might be wet at Spa, and Monza might put a load more corners in!,” he joked. “Singapore has to be the next golden opportunity for us, in reality.

“I think it will be damage limitation in the next two races, because Force India will suddenly reappear, Williams will be quick, McLaren will be quick, Mercedes will be quick, so we’ve got to take what we can out of the next two races, and then for the flyaways really try and set things up.”

Nico Rosberg: “Lewis didn’t let me by although he was ordered to do so, and that’s obviously not good…”

Nico Rosberg made his disappointment clear after finishing fourth in the Hungarian GP, but in the immediate aftermath of the race he was keen to avoid saying anything about the team order controversy.

“We have to discuss that internally, it would not make sense to speak about that now,” he said. “I don’t want to speak theoretically about that situation or what if, it’s better to discuss that in the team, such situations, I hope you understand.”

Later in his regular video message he added: “Lewis didn’t let me by although he was ordered to do so, and that’s obviously not good, and we need to discuss that internally.”

It was clear that he was frustrated by not being able to pass Lewis Hamilton on the last lap.

“I didn’t see anybody for a while, then I caught him on the last two laps, unfortunately not enough to get by. That’s the most annoying thing now, the last lap. I had the chance, but I wasn’t able to use it. Of course it was very difficult, so that was a pity. Other than that, a very up and down race. It was always going to be difficult in those conditions. There were some things that went against me today, I’m not complaining, but that was the case, especially the safety car and things like that, the strategy also wasn’t the best.

“At the moment I’m still very annoyed, because I’m still on the last lap at the moment. It will take some time and then I’ll be OK for the holiday.

“It was a very difficult race today. Some things went against me, I don’t complain, that’s very normal, that happens, and I just didn’t quite make it happen today, together with my team. It’s a team effort and we’ve just got to do better next time. But still ahead in the championship, that’s important. Got some time now to rethink everything and then full attack again for the next races.”

Vettel “absolutely committed” to Red Bull, says Horner

Christian Horner has dismissed suggestions that Sebastian Vettel might be entertaining offers from rival teams, but intriguingly would only confirm that the German would remain at Red Bull in 2015.

It would not be surprising if Vettel was at least seeing what might be available as obviously he wants to be back in a winning car soon.

“Usually it’s the start of the silly season where he’s either going to Ferrari or Eric [Boullier] has made him a big offer or maybe going to Mercedes,” said Horner. “So, we just wait to see which team it’s going to be. But no, Sebastian’s absolutely committed to the team, there’s no doubt at all that he’ll be with Red Bull next year and he’s enjoyed so much success with the team, he’s happy in the team and the team are very happy with him.

“We know we’ve got a lot to do. None of us are comfortable or happy with the situation that we’re currently in – but we’re in it together and we’ll work our way through it.”

Brembo still looking for answers on Hamilton disc failure

Mercedes and Brembo say that they still don’t know what caused Lewis Hamilton’s front brake disc failure in Hockenheim – but the two companies say that investigations are ongoing.

In an unusual joint PR statement they said: “There is currently no clear evidence of a single cause of failure and our continuing rigorous analysis will take into account multiple factors which could have contributed to the incident.

“The results of this technical analysis will be communicated as soon as they are available. Formula One is a domain of advanced development where technologies are pushed to their limits and in which strong partnerships are crucially important.”

The companies say that they “remain committed to a close working relationship in the future.”

Baku to the future as Azerbaijan hosts street race from 2016

Azerbaijan has confirmed that it will host the European Grand Prix from 2016, rather than next year, as had been mooted.

Plans for an F1 street race in Baku, which has hosted GT events, were first made public in March this year.

“I am delighted to officially announce that we have signed a contract to bring Formula One racing to Baku in 2016,” said minister for youth and sport, Azad Rahimov. “The deal to bring Formula One racing to Baku is a very significant new chapter in our ongoing success to attract the world’s largest sporting events to our country.”

Baku hosted a non-championship GT street race in 2012, organised by the Berlin-based City Challenge organisation. Last year it was the venue of the final round of the FIA GT championship, utilising a longer 4.3kms track.

Lewis Hamilton: “If they happen to want someone else I’m not going to whinge about it…”

Lewis Hamilton has made it clear that he wants to stay at Mercedes for the long term, and says that the team knows that he would like to extend his current contract past its end date of 2015.

Meanwhile the transfer market has kicked into gear with suggestions that Mercedes has sounded out Sebastian Vettel about a seat – which presumably means that Stuttgart can see the four-time World Champion alongside fellow countryman Nico Rosberg in 2016 or beyond, given that Rosberg has already extended his contract.

It’s obvious that any such talk will probably unsettle Hamilton, unless of course he already has a pretty good idea that he might want to go to McLaren-Honda or another top team.

“I’m not worried about it,” said Hamilton when asked about Vettel. “Another German driver, I’m not sure that’s something that Mercedes would like. At the moment I’m hear to the end of next year, so it’s not going to be any time soon. But that’s normal, Mercedes is the best, so everyone is going to want to drive a Mercedes.”

Regarding talks on the future he said: “We haven’t sat down yet, but the team know that I would really like to push to continue. They’ve made it clear that they would like to do the same.

“I’ve been with Mercedes since I was 13, so I very much feel like I have Mercedes imprinted on my chest. It’s very much family for me. You never know what’s going to happen in the future, but I can’t see myself anywhere else. If they happen to want someone else, if that’s the way it is, I’m not going to whinge about it. There’s places for everyone.”

FIA decides that Hamilton won’t have to start from pitlane

Lewis Hamilton won’t be forced to start from the pitlane after the FIA accepted that his change of brake disc brand from Brembo to Carbon Industrie does not represent a change of car specification under parc ferme conditions.

Article 34.2 of the 2014 Sporting Regulations states: “It must be clear that any replacement part a team wishes to fit is similar in mass, inertia and function to the original. Any parts removed will be retained by the FIA.”

FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer has apparently accepted that the Carbon Industrie discs are a suitable replacement for the Brembos.

However Hamilton has changed his gearbox after the accident and a five place penalty drops him from 15th to 20th.

Hamilton heading for pitlane start despite Mercedes safety claims

Lewis Hamilton is likely to start the German GP from the pitlane as Mercedes plans to switch him from Brembo to Carbon Industrie discs for the race.

That would be a change of car specification under parc ferme conditions, and a loss of grid position is the automatic result.

An optimistic Toto Wolff says that Mercedes hopes that the FIA will regard the change of supplier as a safety issue, but rivals insist that there is no chance of any leniency, and that it’s a straightforward case of a change of specification.

It’s worth remembering that when RBR had a tyre issue at Spa the team was not allowed to change cambers overnight on safety grounds.

“I don’t think we will be running the same brake material tomorrow because there is no way you can analyse what happened and how to prevent it in the future within 12 hours,” said Wolff. “So the latest information is that we will switch the brake material.”

Regarding the penalty, he said: “I’m not sure that this is totally clarified. We have had a brake failure, which means that we are obliged to make sure that the car is running safe tomorrow. What that could mean is switching the brake supplier. Whether that has to result in starting from the pitlane, we are discussing that with the FIA. I would even go further, obviously many teams are running that brake material, so that safety discussion probably needs to be extended.”

However other teams using Brembo told this writer they do not believe that they face any issues here, although there have been disc failures this year. Teams using Brembo include Ferrari, RBR, Sauber. Force India, Toro Rosso and Marussia.

Regarding Hamilton’s preference for Brembo he said: “Brembo had a failure earlier in the year, and they have upgraded the discs to what supposedly is the safest disc. They have put a lot of research into the carbon disc, so there was no gamble whatsoever, it was just a matter of what suits your driving style more. Both of them have been trying both brake materials almost every weekend.”

Lewis Hamilton: “Obviously Nico’s got another gift…”

Lewis Hamilton will start the German GP from a lowly 15th after he suffered a front right brake disc failure in Q1 and spun heavily into the tyre wall.

Hamilton did not take part in Q2 and was thus officially 16th, but he gained a place from an Esteban Gutierrez grid penalty.

Out of choice Hamilton uses Brembo discs while Nico Rosberg uses Carbon Industrie – it’s not uncommon for drivers to swap around as they search for better ‘feel’ – so the German does not have an issue. The broken disc was new today and the team has no explanation for the failure, although the likelihood is that it was a one-off manufacturing fault.

Hamilton could in theory switch brands for the race – but it would be a change of car spec, and he would have to start from the pit lane.

“It happens so quickly,” said Hamilton. “And the thing is when you’re driving you have to have 110% confidence in the car, and you never, ever enter a corner thinking something’s going to happen. So you hit it [the brake pedal] and it’s a real shock. We’ll figure something out. There’s still a decent amount of races to go. Obviously Nico’s got another gift but we’ll do what we can.

“I can’t believe it, but obviously things like this happen, things are for whatever reason sent to try us. The guys worked hard over the evening, really late last night. We’ve done such a great job with the set-up, it felt fantastic out there, and I didn’t even get to do five laps. It’s nothing really to do with the guys. They’re supposed to have gone through lots of tests with the brakes, which they did. Just a bit unfortunate.”
