Sergio Perez has confirmed his departure from McLaren by issuing a statement via Twitter.
McLaren appears to have copied Ferrari’s choice with Felipe Massa by allowing its driver to announce his exit before any formal statement from the team, as it’s hard to believe that he will have issued it without first consulting the team. Nevertheless the affair had dragged on for longer than it needed to.
The timing is awkward for McLaren to say the least, given the huge number of Mexican fans expected in Austin this weekend. At least the questions about if he is going are out of the way. Now they will be more focussed in why he is going….

Hope he will announce something soon. Hopeful with Lotus
As a McLaren fan I feel it’s the right decision. There needs to be a much more thorough shake-up than just Perez leaving; Whitmarsh should be considering his own position, and Button seems entirely too comfortable.
Magnussen should be blooded next season in the hope that Alonso joins him the next, but the more important signings may be behind the scenes.
We shouldn’t confuse comfort with experience. Jense has been around long enough to know when he’s pushing a crap wagon with no upside to the performance and to reap whatever points are there for the taking.
Checo deserves better, but then Magnussen looks the better prospect.
