FIA reveals driver number choices

The FIA has issued a 2014 World Championship entry list, giving us a first proper look at the numbers chosen by the drivers.

The list also confirms Max Chilton at Marussia, although the team has yet to make a formal announcement. No names are listed as yet for Caterham.

Sebastian Vettel has chosen 5, but has opted to use 1 as reigning World Champion, while perhaps the most unusual choice is that of 13 by Pastor Maldonado. The lowest numbers still available are 2, 4, 9, 10 and 12.

For clarity The drivers are listed below in number order – on the official entry they are still in team order.

Surprised that number 13 went or is that only a western superstition?

I doubt anyone will ever want to be the No 2 driver.

  2. Two quick questions …
Are these numbers really forever? So no one else can ever use #27 or it’s just while that drives competes?

Also, are they not allow to use zero numbers or triple numbers? i.e. 05 or 111.

Maybe I missed it but I never saw anything around rules for numbers.

    • The numbers are for as long as the driver competes, the FIA hasn’t detailed at what stage an old one will be recycled. Given that drivers can come back after one, two or three years away it’s a bit of a grey area. 2-99 are the ones available.

      • Lovely, thanks for the reply! I agree with the gray area about how long before a number will be recycled. I suppose it might come up when someone requests one that another driver had and they could do it case by case at first

Adrian can’t have 99, the Great One already has that number for life. (OK, I wanted to see if anyone knows who I’m talking about)

    KImi’s reasoning seems sound…

“There’s no particular story linked to it,” the Finn told http://www.ferrari.com. “It’s the number I already had last year and I saw no reason to change it. I like it which is good enough isn’t it?”
