Two retirements in two races through collisions with other drivers have left Lewis Hamilton struggling to keep his title challenge on course.
Hamilton says he thought he had left Mark Webber enough room prior to their clash in the Singapore GP, and believed that he had safely cleared the Red Bull.
He added that he didn’t really know what had happened, having not seen a TV replay at that time. Hamilton was forced to stop because his left rear wheel was completely broken, as my picture shows.
“I saw that Mark made a mistake and got caught up with a backmarker, so I was in a position to slipstream him,” said Hamilton. “I was on the outside, going into Turn Seven. I thought I was enough past him. I couldn’t see him any longer, so I braked. I turned in, tried to leave enough room on the inside, and the next thing I know, I got hit.
“It was a bit of a daze really, so I’m not really sure what happened. He was in my blind spot, so I didn’t even know he was still there. I honestly don’t even know what happened. All I know is I went in, I didn’t see anyone alongside me, and next thing I know my tyre’s blown, and that’s it.
“I think it’s a racing incident, as far as I know. I don’t really know what happened, I need to look on the replay.”
Hamilton was a little cautious about his title chances.
“I think it’s a tough call. There’s still four races, but I couldn’t have expected a worse two races, especially at this crucial point of the year. I’ll do what I can.
“Twenty points is massive, with four races to go, that’s a big gap.”

It was a tough call, I think Webber got fortunate with the stewards, for me Lewis had the line and was infront when they made contact, the equivalent of Webber firing up the inside and over cooking it a bit, Hamilton got hit in the rear corner with Webbers front?? I was a racing incident, and neither was going to yield. Hats off to RedBull though, not only is that car rapid it’s also pretty tough! I think Hamilton’s championship challenge went out of the window today and Button is just not sharp enough this year to bring any silverware to the team. I look forward to being proved wrong!
I’m wondering a little bit why he didn’t try to drive it to the pits and get a new tire/wheel as I’m thinking he could have made it easily. I suppose he couldn’t have scored any points but he made a quick decision to park it; most guys give it a couple corners.
Ramilton had what line??? nonsense talk…..Rammy turned across Webber and clipped him, so whose fault is that?? Totally Rammys fault from what i saw, he turned across Webber too fast and wasnt fully in front of him so they touched!! 3 dnfs in 5 races….chumpion form for the Lewser…..I would love to have seen moRon Dennis face after Fernando stuffed such a perfect win up his fat a55!!! #:)
Hamilton didn’t have any line and it only appeared he had passed Mark because, to his own credit, Mark saw the collision happening and got on the breaks a bit early. That saved them from a much larger collision in my opinion so all credit to Mark for that foresight.
Bob, I believe the car had suspension damage. Lewis must have felt that something was broken.
The collision argument has been thrashed to smithereens already on the various F1 pages. However there is one comparatively small point that I have not seen mention of.
Isn’t there a rule about steering wheels? Like the driver is supposed to place it back on the steering column after exiting the car.
Did anyone notice what Hamilton did with his? I believe that’s the second time he’s done that this season. I figure it warrants a little chat with the officials at least.
@Tom
That sir is an eagle eyed spot and half.
As per the rest of the discussion for me Webber had his car up the inside, thus you can’t turn across him and expect to come away without damage *cough Vettel/Hamilton cough*
