Williams thanks rivals and FIA after garage fire

Williams has issued a statement about today’s garage fire in Spain, confirming that four team members were hurt.

The team also thanked other paddock personnel for their help in fighting the fire, which started when a fuel rig appeared to explode.

The statement reads: After today’s Spanish Grand Prix a fire occurred in the team’s garage whichriginated from the fuel area.

Four team personnel were injured in the incident and subsequently taken to the medical centre. Three are now receiving treatment at local hospitals for their injuries, while the fourth has been released. The team will monitor their condition and ensure they receive the best possible care.

The team, the fire services and the police are working together to determine the root cause of the fire and an update statement will be released in due course.

The Williams F1 Team would like to thank all of the teams and the FIA for their support in today’s incident.

Thank goodness no-one is seriously hurt. The BBC footage I saw looked like efforts to tackle the fire were a bit chaotic and ineffective, I suspect the FIA will want to look closely at what happened and consider if they need to mandate teams to have better fire fighting resources in the garage such as automatic foam extinguisher systems. I hope that everyone is recovered quickly and damage to equipment does not hamper efforts for the next GP in 2 weeks time.

  2. Maybe Senna ghost didn’t like the treatment MSC gave to Bruno and decided to play with fire?

If you had been watching on sky you would have seen from the pit lane where it was obvious that almost every mechanic on site was in there with fire extinguishers despite the dense black smoke. Certainly neither chaotic nor ineffective as they had a very serious fire virtually extinguished by the time the fire brigade arrived. Well done everyone!!

Liz, they are all heroes but my point was that everyone was in there without proper protection (which is why so many needed medical treatment) and with every type of extinguisher that could be brought to hand. Now we have KERS, and fuelling takes place in the garage, perhaps the garages need to be fitted with a standardised automatic extinguishing system.

I believe the newer circuits have automatic sprinkler systems but I aagree that anything which would have prevented injury or the vast potential this fire held would
        be great.

  4. I am very happy for the victory of the ‘old’ Williams, I had earned and more after the fire.

Fire is one of the worst if not the worst things to happen in the garages, I agree with Mick, I’m sure the FiA will take a close look at how this was handled and why it happened. Kudos to all the teams who helped.

I’d be interested to hear what exactly happened. I can’t remember anything this serious happening in F1 for a long, long time.

So no headline about Maldonado’s win, but 2 about Lewis. No headline about William’s win, but 1 about the fire in the garage…

    • I don’t do race reports here. I did a Maldonado is mega story on two other websites after the race, individual Maldonado and Williams are both mega stories for a magazine, and if you look at Autosport.com on Tuesday you will see a long analysis of of why Maldonado and Williams are mega… BTW on Saturday night I had a tweet saying I had written about Hamilton getting a penalty but hadn’t done a story on him getting pole, and therefore I must be a rascist. Sometimes I wonder why I bother…
