F166 Turbo takes early lead as fans name new Ferrari

Ferrari will launch its 2014 car on the afternoon of Saturday January 25th, the day after McLaren unveils its new machine online.

Ferrari has taken the unusual step of asking the public to name the car, with an online poll to choose between five different options. The names reflect either the year of 2014, or the 1.6-litre V6 engine configuration.

The choices are F14 T, F14 Maranello, F14 Scuderia, F166 Turbo and F616. F166 Turbo had the early lead against strong competition from F14 T, which as has been pointed out, looks a bit like ‘FIAT’…

F14 T is in the lead. Looks like FIAT to me!

What is the significance of the various numbers? Presumably 14 being 2014, but why 166 and 616?

    • V6 1.6 litre = 616 or 166. Just as 3-litre flat 12 = 312 (1970s), 1.5-litre V6 = 156 (1985), 3-litre V10 = 310 (1996-97), V8 1.5-litre = 158 (1964), etc. However Ferrari hasn’t always followed such a neat system!

Thanks. Seems appropriate as it’s the start of a new generation of engines that the name reflects that, so I’d agree with the F166 Turbo

The Scuderia wisely gave the Tifosi five choices, rather than asking for submissions, I’d have probably said call it “Ferrari che suona strano.”
