Palmer and Goddard to test for Force India

Force India has confirmed that Jolyon Palmer and Richard ‘Spike’ Goddard will test for the team in Abu Dhabi next week.

GP2 champion Palmer, who will be having his first ever run in an F1 car, must presumably now be considered as a candidate for a third driver role in 2015.

Aussie Goddard gets his chance after three years in F3.

“I’m pleased that we can conclude our season by giving two promising youngsters their first taste of Formula One,” said Vijay Mallya. “As a team we have a strong track record of identifying up-and-coming prospects and giving them valuable mileage and experience in our cars. I have been following Jolyon’s progress this season in GP2 and he is clearly a big talent that deserves a chance in Formula One. Spike has also worked hard to get this chance and it’s the perfect opportunity to showcase his skills.”

“Sahara Force India has shown their faith in me by offering this opportunity and I am looking forward to repaying their trust in Abu Dhabi,” said Palmer. “I have worked very hard for a chance like this and I want to help the team get the most from this test session. This is a team that has always promoted talent and I hope this opportunity can lead to bigger things in the future.”

Goddard said: “Every young racing driver dreams to be at the wheel of a Formula One car and I am very excited to be one of the very few who gets to fulfil this dream. The test is an important stage in the preparations for 2015 and I hope my contribution will be useful for the team to get a head start for next season.”

McLaren postpones driver news until “after Dec 1”

McLaren confirmed via Twitter tonight that it will announce its 2015 driver line-up no earlier than December 1st – and then followed up with a statement saying that the idea was to “avoid distracting the race team.”

McLaren also confirmed that the Honda test car will run in Abu Dhabi on the Tuesday and Wednesday after the race, subject to final bench testing.

The statement said: “Selecting the optimal driver line-up for a Formula 1 team is clearly an important process, and it is therefore one that requires precise and prolonged analysis. That being the case, and in order to avoid distracting the race team from its primary objective during the final Grand Prix weekend of the season, which is to secure the best possible on-track results, we have decided to defer our final deliberations relating to our 2015 driver line-up until a date no earlier than Monday December 1st.

“Meanwhile, we are working extremely hard to ensure that every element of our competitive package for 2015 and beyond is also specified to the fullest extent. We have spent the past nine months comprehensively recruiting and restructuring within our design and engineering departments; over the next few days we will be evaluating and trialling a range of aerodynamic upgrades for the forthcoming Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and for the 2015 Formula 1 season; furthermore, we are now only a few days away from formally commencing our exciting technical partnership with Honda, and, subject to satisfactory final bench-testing, it is currently our intention to run our interim development car, the McLaren MP4-29H/1X1, on the test days that will follow the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.”

Haas F1 names Borland as vice president of technology

Matt Borland is to be vice president of technology for both the Haas F1 Team and the sister Stewart-Haas Racing outfit.

Borland worked for Pi Research before becoming Mark Blundell’s race engineer at PacWest. He moved to NASCAR with Penske in 1999 and then had a spell with Michael Waltrip before joining Haas in may 2007.

The team says that Borland “will oversee the transfer of Formula One technology to Stewart-Haas Racing while providing Haas F1 Team with deep engineering resources. Concurrently, the highly-respected Borland will serve as a gatekeeper, ensuring the privacy of proprietary information respective to each team.”

It will be fascinating to know just how much Ferrari F1 data might be useful to the NASCAR team, and vice versa…

“I’m an engineer at heart, so I’m always interested in building things,” said Borland. “It’s been very satisfying to help build Stewart-Haas Racing from a two-car team to a four-car team that’s always capable of winning championships. Now I have the best of both worlds, as I can continue to help improve Stewart-Haas Racing while building Haas F1 Team. We work smart and efficiently at Stewart-Haas Racing, and there are best practices we can apply to Haas F1 Team. Eventually, both organizations will make each other better, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Caterham will struggle to ready car for 2015 season

Amid the excitement over Caterham making the trip to Abu Dhabi in order to secure its future doubts remain over the team’s ability to build a 2015 car on time.

When the previous management stepped aside work was well underway on the new chassis, but that has stopped since the administrator took over. There is now no activity at the factory as only a skeleton race team has been re-hired on a ‘consultancy’ basis in order to run the Abu Dhabi weekend.

Sources say that the chances of Caterham readying a new car in time for next season are diminishing rapidly, should someone be able to salvage the outfit post-Abu Dhabi. That means the only option would be to extend the life of the 2014 chassis.

The major change to next year’s rules involves the front chassis height, and while some teams say that they would not be able to carry over their 2014 chassis, apparently in theory Caterham can comply.

The bigger problem is that the power unit Renault is homologating for 2015 requires substantial repackaging, and that will be a costly and lengthy process.

Renault suggested to the previous management that Caterham sticks with the 2014 power unit, which would be cheaper. In addition the initial version of the 2015 power unit is not expected to be an improvement on the current one, which explains why Red Bull is so keen to introduce a summer upgrade.

However under the rules manufacturers can only have one power unit homologated, and thus the 2014 version will no longer be legal.

It’s understood that Renault and the previous Caterham management lobbied the FIA for permission to use the older power unit, and that Jean Todt said he would refer the matter to the F1 Commission and thus the World Motor Sport Council.

It remains to be seen whether that request is still being processed, and indeed what plans have been put in place by administrator Finbarr O’Connell. Any discussion of what route might be taken is academic as long as the team has no staff…

Tost confirms Lynn still in frame for Toro Rosso seat

GP3 champion elect Alex Lynn remains in the frame for a Toro Rosso race seat in 2015, despite strong competition from Jean-Eric Vergne, Carlos Sainz Jr and outside bet Pierre Gasly.

Since Danill Kvyat was announced for RBR Vergne’s chances of hanging onto his seat have increased, for the very obvious reason that the team might want one experienced driver alongside Max Verstappen next year. Meanwhile Sainz’s Renault 3.5 win has underlined that he has a strong case, and the Spaniard will be testing for RBR in Abu Dhabi next week, as part of a prize for winning the title.

However Lynn, who was picked up by Red Bull after winning the Macau GP last year, is still very much in contention – and at the very least could secure a reserve driver role at RBR/STR.

At the moment only Max Verstappen is scheduled to do the Abu Dhabi test for STR, although it’s understood that was agreed before Kvyat’s departure created a vacancy.

“I saw every race from Alex this year,” Tost told this writer. “He has done a good job so far. There’s the final race in Abu Dhabi, and I think he’ll win the championship because he only needs a few points. He’s a high-skilled driver, he’s done a good season, he’s leading the championship, and the rest we will see.

“Of course we will sit together with Red Bull and will decide who will be the second driver for next year. The only thing is if Lynn is coming to us it’s not easy to have two young drivers, that’s the problem. But we will see, in the end it’s a decision from Red Bull. The main drivers are Jean-Eric, Sainz, Gasly and Lynn. This does not mean that Lynn is the last – these are the Red Bull young drivers.

“The situation has changed because we were totally surprised by the decision of Sebastian Vettel to go to another team next year, and therefore we have to decide what will be the best situation, the best possibility for the team.”

Lynn remains hopeful that he has done enough to make his case.

“Red Bull gave me the task of winning GP3 this year and I am well on the way to achieving that objective,” he said. “The record books show I have always had the upper hand racing head-to-head with both Daniil and Carlos and I hope I have done enough to be fully in the frame when Dr Marko and Torro Rosso are considering their options for next year. As highlighted in Macau, I perform at my best under pressure on the big stage and am 100% ready for an F1 move next season.”

Paffett leaves McLaren test role after eight years

Gary Paffett is to leave McLaren at the end of this season after being a test and reserve driver for the team since 2006.

Paffett, who continues to drive for Mercedes in DTM, leaves just as Honda replaces the Stuttgart manufacturer. His departure potentially opens up more opportunities for Stoffel Vandoorne.

“I’ve loved working for McLaren and hope my feedback and input over the years has been beneficial,” said Paffett. “The engineers I’ve worked with have been kind enough to say that it has. I have many friends at McLaren, and I wish all of them the very best of luck for the future. Fingers crossed for a McLaren grand prix win or two next year!”

McLaren acting CEO Jonathan Neale said “Gary has been an excellent member of the McLaren team for the best part of a decade, and his technical input, on test track and in simulator alike, has been hugely important to us. Just as important, he’s a great guy. We wish him well.”

Caterham confirms Kobayashi for Abu Dhabi

Caterham has confirmed that Kamui Kobayashi will return to race for the team in Abu Dhabi.

The second driver has yet to be announced, but it won’t be either Marcus Ericsson or Andre Lotterer, both of whom have made it clear that they won’t be racing.

“It hasn’t been an easy last few weeks, so it will be nice to be back to in the car and work together with the Caterham F1 team members,” said Kobayashi. “I would like to thank the fans for supporting the team like they have.  This team is working hard and never gives up. We deserve to be racing in Abu Dhabi and I am very glad we can race again thanks to the crowdfunding Project.

“Now it is our turn to show what we can do – we will all try our best during the weekend ahead and hopefully we can end the season with a positive result for the future of this team.”

Caterham confirms trip to Abu Dhabi

Caterham has now officially confirmed that it will travel to the Abu Dhabi GP, despite not reaching the proposed £2.35m crowdfunding target.

No mention has been made of drivers, and remains to be seen how competitive or organised the last minute will be.

In a statement administrator Finbarr O’Connell said: “We set ourselves a major challenge, but it’s definitely been worth it! In only a week the fans have made the impossible, possible. We knew that the best way to keep this team alive and attract possible buyers was to show that it’s still a racing team and be in Abu Dhabi for the finale, and there aren’t enough words to say how grateful we are to all the fans that have made this possible.

“We now head to Abu Dhabi ready to show what a hard-working and positive group of people this is and to hopefully secure a future for the team. During the past few days the interest of many potential buyers has increased massively and by racing in Abu Dhabi the team will be showcasing itself as a live and functioning team that deserves to continue into 2015 and beyond.

“It has hard-working people, team spirit and experience and now it only needs a secure financial future which I’m very hopeful we can achieve. Once again, I’d like to reiterate that we are racing in Abu Dhabi thanks to all the fans out there – an achievement that will go down in F1 history and one that we can all be very proud of. We still need to raise a bit more cash so please do keep an eye on the Crowdcube website. Let’s go racing!”

Administrator still confident that Caterham will go to Abu Dhabi

Caterham administrator Finbarr O’Connell remains confident that the team will travel to Abu Dhabi this weekend, despite the crowdfunding total being some £1m short of the intended target of £2.35m.

O’Connell says that the team will probably go and rely on some last minute deals adding to the total. Under the commercial arrangements with Bernie Ecclestone teams can miss two races, Bernie has made it clear that attendance at the final race is crucial to the future.

There is no news on drivers, with Marcus Ericsson having withdrawn from the team earlier this week, despite having already paid his sponsorship for the full season.

“I am 90 percent confident that we are going,” O’Connell told Reuters. “In the last few days three interested buyers have come forward. They are people with F1 connections who are seriously interested and who if any of them bought it, the world would say ‘that makes sense.’”

Regarding last minute deals, he said: “If some of those things happen, we expect to be announcing we are going. If we are still a few hundred thousand pounds short, we will recalibrate up to race day to raise the rest.”

Meanwhile a source told this writer: “The staff have been made redundant but the race team personnel re-engaged as consultants to be paid if they go to Abu Dhabi. They haven’t been told yet.”

Kimi Raikkonen: If you don’t win the title you have failed

Kimi Raikkonen says that he has not found the 2014 season with Ferrari particularly frustrating – for the simple reason that he regards any year that doesn’t result in a title as a failure.

The Finn has endured his toughest year ever, and has only made the top six on two occasions.

“I think every season that you don’t win the championship – and I’ve won one – you can more or less forget the rest,” he said in Brazil. “You are here to try to win races and championships, and when you don’t manage to do the championship, you’ve failed every time. Finishing second or 20th makes not much difference. Obviously it’s been a hard year, but for sure we learned things from this year also, and it will help us in the future.

“But it’s not so much fun when you have a difficult race after race. When you have better results obviously it’s more fun for everybody. But that’s how it goes in F1 sometimes. We have to believe our own things, what we do. I’m sure we can get back where we should be and then obviously things will be forgotten.”

Regarding the prospects for next year’s Ferrari he said: “Obviously there are a lot of numbers and things you hear, but it’s the same story with every team, every year. Once we get the car on the circuit then you really know how good it is and how it feels. There are so many things, even little changes, that can have an effect on that.

“They started earlier in the year on the design of the new car, and obviously all of the things we’ve been doing this year they listen to us and make changes on certain things, and try to improve areas that we feel are lacking performance. The fact is we will know exactly how it is at the first test.”
