Christian Horner: “It’s obvious that Renault has had a few issues…”

Red Bull boss Christian Horner remains confident that Renault will be able to address the issues that have afflicted the RB10 this week.

Sebastian Vettel has logged only 11 laps after the car suffered problems with its energy store, one of the key elements of the energy recovery system.

“I think this test was always designed to be a systems check,” Horner told this writer. “It’s obvious that Renault have had a few issues down here that they’re working hard to get on top of. I’m sure that with more dyno time, and bit more track time, they should be fine.

“Of course any track time is valuable, we’ve just got to make sure we recover it in the remaining test days.”

The car emerged late yesterday after the team had a problem of its own, before the Renault issues struck.

“It was internal within the gearbox, and it was an issue that cost us a bit of track time, but our track time was curtailed at the end of the day anyway.”

Pirelli opts to use today for wet tyre running

Pirelli has decided that today will be the mandatory day of wet running for all the F1 teams.

The 2014 rules call for one of the pre-season test days to be given over to wet tyres.

Pirelli has originally planned to use Friday, but with rain due today anyway the company has decided to make the switch, and a tanker is wetting the track before the session starts in order to give nature a helping hand.

Meanwhile the McLaren MP4-29 is due to run its first laps this morning.

Our nose design is legal, says Lotus

E22

Lotus has countered speculation about the legality of its twin-pronged nose by insisting that it is legal.

Technical director Nick Chester said: “As you know we have passed all the necessary crash tests and we are very confident that our design complies with all the FIA legal requirements – we have just taken an innovative direction, and one that’s different to the other teams. Where there are so many variations in design, there is always bound to be a little talk, but we remain relaxed and focussed on our design and progression.”

Regarding what the team can learn despite missing the Jerez test, Chester said: “It’s always interesting to see what solutions the other teams have. Obviously you can’t see under the skin of the cars easily where the majority of the design work takes place, but it’s always interesting to see the various aero packaging on the other cars. We’ll look at the different bodywork options they’re running and there’s always a few things to pick up on what they are pursuing.

“As we can see there are plenty of different solutions out there as we expected there would be with such a radical change of regulations. There appears to be some elegant solutions and others that certainly don’t look as nice! We’re very happy with the direction we have taken, and it will be very interesting to see how the cars perform once we get a proper chance to compare them on track.”

New Mercedes W05 on show in Jerez

Mercedes unveiled its new W05 in the Jerez pitlane today, four days after Nico Rosberg gave it a brief 40kms shakedown at Silverstone. Lewis Hamiltion is due to drive the car today.

“For 2014 we have probably the greatest change in regulations in Formula One history and the start of a new era for our sport,” said Executive Director (Technical) Paddy Lowe. “From a technical and also a racing perspective, this is an incredibly exciting time for Formula One. We are introducing technologies that are new not just to racing but to the wider automotive world as well. The headline is that of improved efficiency and the fact that we will be completing races with advanced Hybrid systems on just 100 kg of fuel sends a great message about the technology that Formula One can deliver.

“But it is also about the technology that Mercedes-Benz can develop compared with our competition, both for the chassis and the new Power Unit. The whole team has done a fantastic job on the management of the project and its delivery. We have hit our milestones and hit our targets but, as ever, we will only begin to understand how successful we have been once we begin running in anger on track. The new car is an elegant but aggressive design and, as is often the way, its beauty is much more than skin deep; the internal engineering of the car is extremely innovative and intelligent. Our team can be justifiably proud of its work so far – but none of us are under any illusions about the amount we still have to do before the first race in six weeks’ time.”

Monisha Kaltenborn: “We have put a very challenging year behind us…”

The Sauber C33 was revealed online today

The Sauber C33 was revealed online today

Sauber team boss Monisha Kaltenborn remains optimistic about the upcoming season, despite the obvious financial squeeze at the Swiss team.

She made no reference to the difficult situation in a Q&A issued when the new car was unveiled online.

“We have put a very challenging year behind us,” said Kaltenborn. “The first half of 2013 in particular was difficult for us, but the second half saw us making significant strides. We learnt a great deal during this time and will be applying the lessons in the new season.”

Regarding prospects for the season, she said: “We’ll be having our roll-out in Jerez. That is always a very special moment, because first of all we’ll see if everything really fits together and if the car is running well. It also tells us if we have been working in the right direction for the last nine months. All this makes it a very emotional moment.

“Due to the big changes on the chassis side, but particularly on the drive train side, it is impossible to give any indication about our competitiveness. We can do that at the earliest after the winter tests, particularly when we have seen where we stand compared to our competitors. As always, it’s going to be our target to improve our position in the championship.”

Kaltenborn says she’s happy with the driver line-up.

“This year we have a very exciting driver line-up. On the one hand we have Adrian, a very experienced racing driver, and I’m happy that we finally had the opportunity to work together. On the other hand we have Esteban, a young talented driver who we have known for many years, and has also been a member of the team. This is very valuable considering the big changes that are coming this season.

“I hope the drivers can get to know the car very quickly and that we have all our reliability issues sorted out, so that together with the drivers we can work on the performance and develop the car further.”

FIA and Pirelli finally confirm F1 supply deal

The FIA and Pirelli have finally got around to announcing that the Italian company has signed a new three-year F1 tyre supply contract.

The confirmation comes just 12 days before the start of testing in Jerez.

In a jointly issued statement, they said: “The world motorsport’s governing body and Pirelli, in collaboration with the teams, have been working together to improve levels of safety and performance in Formula One, resulting in important changes to the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations regarding the testing of tyres, which will enable the Italian company to continue its Formula One single supply arrangements in the best interests of the sport.

“Pirelli will continue to determine the specification of the tyres and to manage all aspects of their development, in close consultation with the FIA and the teams, and within the parameters set out in the FIA Formula One Sporting & Technical Regulations.”

As previously noted the FIA has agreed to a number of changes to the testing regulations in an attempt to give Pirelli more dedicated track time.

One of the 12 upcoming days of pre-season testing will be dedicated to wet running, while each team has to save one of its eight days of in-season testing for exclusive tyre testing. Either one or two teams will run for Pirelli on each of the eight days.

Pirelli is clearly trying to improve its relationship with the FIA, as both parties “have agreed to discuss a possible partnership on the FIA Action for Road Safety campaign.”

Kobayashi set for F1 return with Caterham

Kamui Kobayashi is set to return to F1 with Caterham after emerging as the most qualified candidate for the seat.

With rookie Marcus Ericsson likely to be in the other car the team has been keen to employ an experienced driver.

At the same time Tony Fernandes and his fellow shareholders are still reluctant to keep pumping money into the team, and thus the ideal candidate would have experience and a budget.

Heikki Kovalainen has been in the frame for months, and until recently was under contract to the team, but as is well known he does not have any sponsorship. The same applies to Paul di Resta, the only other experienced driver who competed in 2013 and is without a drive.

Although he last raced in F1 in 2012 Kobayashi is eminently qualified – having compared well with Sergio Perez at Sauber – and more importantly unlike Kovalainen, he has significant sponsorship. Sources told this blog that he has a budget of €6m.

If confirmed Kobayashi’s return will be well received by both Bernie Ecclestone and Honda, owners of Suzuka, as it will be a major boost for the Japanese GP.

Sutil finally confirmed at Sauber

Sauber has confirmed that Adrian Sutil will join the Swiss team next year, as previously predicted here.

The announcement follows lengthy negotiations. The German driver had expected to stay at Force India, but found himself squeezed out after Sergio Perez came onto the market. He had already laid the groundwork for a possible move to the Hinwil outfit, but over the weeks since the Brazilian GP the move has at times been in the balance due to uncertainty over the team’s future plans.

An added complication was that he could not proceed until the long rumoured Perez move to Force India was officially confirmed yesterday.

“We are pleased, that we were able to sign Adrian, particularly as we have been wanting to work together with him for a while,” said team boss Monisha Kaltenborn. “Adrian had already visited the factory at the end of September to have a look at the infrastructure. Adrian is not only very fast, but also brings a lot of experience, which is very important looking at the new regulations for next year. We welcome Adrian to the Sauber F1 Team and look forward to a successful collaboration.”

“I am very happy that we found common ground,” said Sutil. “Although I have known for a while where I wanted to go, in the end the negotiations took a bit longer than planned. However, now I will have all the more reason to celebrate during the Christmas season. I’ve been in contact with Monisha for a while, and she always gave me the feeling my qualities are valued. After six good years driving for Force India, with a lot of highlights, it’s now time to embark on a new challenge.

“I am determined to do my part in order to have a successful future together with the Sauber F1 Team. The long and successful tradition in motorsport, combined with an impressive factory and one of the best wind tunnels in F1, have been fascinating me for a long time. Thank you to Peter Sauber and Monisha Kaltenborn for your trust in me.”

Rush nominated for Best Drama in Golden Globes

Ron Howard’s Rush has received a prestigious Golden Globe nomination as Best Drama.

In the awards, backed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, best film is split into the Drama and Comedy/Musical categories, so it does not represent a direct reflection of what might happen at the Academy Awards. However given that 10 films are nominated for the Best Picture Oscar Rush has a good chance of making the shortlist.

The film’s Golden Globe opposition comes from 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, Gravity and Philomena.

Meanwhile Daniel Bruhl, who played Niki Lauda, has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor. He will be up against Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave) and Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club).

Bruhl was also nominated this week in the same category for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 16, with Rush strongly tipped to feature in many of the technical categories, such as sound, make-up and editing.

Perez finally confirmed at Force India

Sergio Perez has finally been officially confirmed as Nico Hulkenberg’s new team mate at Force India.

The Mexican began talking to the team soon after he was dropped by McLaren, whose boss Martin Whitmarsh also tried to persuade the Silverstone outfit to take his departing driver.

His longtime mentor Carlos Slim personally intervened to help Perez land the drive.

“He brings a healthy mix of youth and experience, and I’ve been very impressed with his recent performances,” said Dr Vijay Mallya. “He already has several podium finishes to his name and being chosen by McLaren last year was a clear indication that he is a driver to watch for the future. We also recognise Sergio’s incredible talent and we are proud to have him in our team. He clearly has great speed and plenty of fire in his belly. Our job is to make sure he settles in quickly by creating the right atmosphere so that he can realise his potential. By pairing Sergio alongside Nico, we enter the new season with an extremely competitive line-up, which will go toward helping us achieve our goals for the new season.”

“Coming here was always my first choice and I’m really happy everything has now been confirmed,” said Perez. “I want to say thank you to Vijay and the whole team for giving me the opportunity. This is a young team with a lot of determination and they’ve produced competitive cars for the last few years. It’s all change for next season with the new regulations, but I already have a good feeling about 2014. My plan now is to visit the factory and get to know everyone in the team.”

The news means that Adrian Sutil, who had an ongoing contract with Force India, is currently without a drive. However he remains close to Sauber, with whom he has been in close contact for some weeks.

Meanwhile Paul Di Resta has known for some months that he has been out of a job.
