The Spygate case reared its ugly head again today when Nigel Stepney’s legal case came to a conclusion in Sassuolo, some three years after the controversial events of 2007.
According to the local paper, the Gazzetta di Modena, Stepney received a 20-month sentence and €600 fine after being found guilty of “sabotage, espionage, sporting fraud and attempted serious injury.” The latter related to the matter of the infamous white powder which in theory – had it caused Kimi Raikkonen’s engine to seize – could have caused an accident…
The sentence was reduced by a plea bargain with prosecutor Giuseppe Tibis. However it seems that the way Italian law works, Stepney won’t actually serve any jail time.
Lawyers from both Stepney and Ferrari expressed satisfaction with the verdict.

“Italian Law”. A good rule in life: never be involved in legal proceedings in Italy – ever. Ask Frank Williams or anyone presented with the prospect. Or that American college co-ed rotting in an Italian prison.
I recall Colin Chapman avoiding going to Italy for the ’71 GP for fear of repercussions after Rindt’s death at Monza the year before.
However to compare this story to the Amanda Knox case seems wide of the mark, she seemed pretty damn guilty to me!
Wide of the mark? I think not. In any event – this is not the place for that discussion.
Ross,
Not to detract from the racing stories here, but Amanda Knox is in jail because of Italian Judges misrepresentation of American Foreign politics and not because of a murder.
There was NO (zero, nada, zipo) DNA evidence found in the room from Amanda Knox, but yet that evidence was not allowed by the Italian judges, hmm.
Oh, right this is Italy, where Ferrari and the Pope can’t do anything wrong…and everyone else is guilty.
